Multicultural Education A Light in a Troubled World
NAME Conference - November 2021
Anaheim, California

A global pandemic, social distancing, inequitable vaccine availability, a threat to democracy by domestic insurrection, public school funding for special education and other equity-focused programs in jeopardy, teaching and learning via zoom and other virtual platforms leaving many of us feeling alone and isolated…. The world is indeed troubled. Multicultural education is a beacon of light and hope for students, educators, families and communities alike through its commitment to social justice and culturally inclusive and unifying practices that pave the path to a brighter and more just future.

As we move toward living in places of peace and justice, NAME and our friends and allies encourage conversations about possible ways to address the inequities and systems that stand in the way of progress. NAME and our 2021 Conference Committee invite change agents in education and beyond to submit proposals for presentations to be included in our 31th annual conference. We encourage you to contribute to the conversation.

Questions: Proposals@NAMEorg.org
The call for proposals will remain open until April 15, at 11:59pm ET.

Types of Sessions

Presentation (Any Organizing Level)
A “Presentation” allows one or more presenters to share their work (such as innovative curriculum and instructional methods, programs and policies, and research projects). Presentations should leave time for discussion. Conference organizers may group related presentations into 50 minute sessions.

Interactive Workshop (Any Organizing Level)
An “Interactive Workshop” provides an opportunity to engage participants in active, collaborative, experiential learning, and is 50 minutes in duration. Sessions that model a lesson or curriculum and engage participants in reflection and inquiry are especially encouraged.

Panel (Any Organizing Level)
A “Panel” allows three to five presenters to describe and share their work (such as innovative curriculum and instructional methods, programs and policies, and research projects). Panel presentations should leave time for discussion. To qualify as a "Panel" a minimum of THREE presenters must be included in the proposal submission.

Roundtable (Any Organizing Level)

A “Roundtable” engages the presenter and audience members in a group discussion about the presenter’s research or practice.  This format may also be used to discuss receive feedback on a work-in-progress. You will present for 10-15 minutes, followed by a discussion with audience members. These sessions are held in a large meeting room with multiple tables that seat 10 -12 people each and are 50 minutes in duration. New presenters and graduate students are especially encouraged to propose this type of session. However, all levels are welcome.

Poster (Any Organizing Level)

A “Poster” conveys ideas using a blending of narrative and visual aids on a large poster board and provides a forum for one-on-one conversations. The Poster sessions are held in a large meeting space with multiple posters on display simultaneously, with presenters near their posters for a conversation with attendees, and are 50 minutes in duration. Items on the poster should include a title, author(s), abstract (up to 300 words, in the upper left-hand corner), descriptions in accessible language, and other materials. NAME does NOT provide poster supplies, please come equipped. Presenters are responsible for setting up their posters 10 minutes before their session begins and removing it immediately following. New presenters and graduate students are especially encouraged to propose this type of session. However, all levels are welcome.

Proposal Evaluation Rubric

The possible range for individual criteria score is 1-5 with 5 being the highest.
The highest possible total combined score for a proposal is 20.

Criteria

Present, but weak

(1-2)

Average

(3)

Extremely Strong

(4-5)

Conference Theme

No ties to theme even if rhetoric says these are tied in.

Has some ties to theme; for example, in content and/or outcomes.

Clearly addresses conference theme. Overall proposal is clear as to its relation to both.

Significance of Content

Issues raised are not significant.  Does not add to or reinforce existing work in multicultural education.

Reinforces, but does not add to, current research, knowledge, or practice bases in the field.  May shed new light on multicultural issues through the perspective(s) it takes.

Clear information. Rationale is based on current research, knowledge, and/or practice (praxis) in the field, and adds to one or more of these foundations. Timely. In-depth.

Audience Interaction & Process of Presentation

No attention to presenter-audience interaction. Process is not clear or is incompatible with time frame.

Some interaction between audience and presenters will take place. Some attention to designing a well-timed and interesting presentation is evident.

Highly interactive pedagogy or presenter-audience interaction is described. Materials described are relevant and innovative. Time frame of presentation is explained.

Organizing Level, Audience & Participant Outcomes

Proposal does not really address organizing level/audience. Little or no attention is given to participant outcomes.

Proposal description does not match organizing level, or proposal is too general or too specific to make an accurate assessment. Describes desired participant outcomes, but it is not altogether clear how they will be achieved.

Proposal makes its content level explicit and explains why various groups of attendees with that level of knowledge in the field would be interested. Provides an explicit statement of participant outcomes and how they will be achieved.
