Rosa Parks (1913 - 2005)
The National Association for
Multicultural Education mourns the loss of one of
America's greatest heroines. We celebrate her life and her
sacrifices by not taking for granted the hard fought civil rights
that we now enjoy. We honor her life by continuing to work together
for educational equity and social justice.

The "December Dilemma"
December
Holiday Guidelines
for Public Schools |
Every
December, public school
students, parents,
teachers and
administrators face the
difficult task of
acknowledging the
various religious and
secular holiday
traditions celebrated
during that time of
year. Teachers,
administrators and
parents should try to
promote greater
understanding and
tolerance among students
of different traditions
by taking care to adhere
to the requirements of
the First Amendment
The First Amendment
guarantees freedom of
religion to all
Americans — including
young schoolchildren —
by prohibiting the
government from
endorsing or promoting
any particular religious
point of view. This
prohibition has led
courts to ban such
plainly coercive
religious activities in
public schools as
organized prayer and the
teaching of creationism.
The law is less clear
regarding the limits on
holiday celebrations in
public schools, but a
number of guidelines
should be
followed in order to
ensure that our public
schools can best
celebrate the religious
freedom upon which our
nation was founded.

while doing this work. Now he prods us all to be real and be effective from a

►Feminist
Majority Foundation |
Feminism n. the policy, practice or advocacy of political, economic, and social equality for women.
The Feminist Majority Foundation (FMF), which was founded in 1987, is a cutting edge organization dedicated to women's equality, reproductive health, and non-violence. In all spheres, FMF utilizes research and action to empower women economically, socially, and politically. Our organization believes that feminists - both women and men, girls and boys - are the majority, but this majority must be empowered. |
