Vincent York's JAZZISTRY (Jazz + History + Artistry) is an upbeat, multicultural, interactive arts-integrated thematic curriculum connecting history to the evolution of American music. With veteran musician Vincent York and his band of five virtuoso jazz musicians as tour guides, history comes to life...and swings! Using diverse musical examples,  multimedia images, and true stories we begin in Africa, and cover the evolution of American music over 400 years. It is a toe-tapping demonstration of how diverse cultural traditions and historical events combined to produce our unique American culture and that prized world treasure--Jazz.

JAZZISTRY, an educational non-profit based in Ann Arbor, MI has excited audiences of all ages in over 100 schools in the Upper Midwest over the last 4 years. The JAZZISTRY Band takes the audience time-traveling, from African traditional songs, through hymns, spirituals, European marches, ragtime, the blues, New Orleans jazz, Harlem swing, Kansas City bebop...all the way to Hip Hop! JAZZISTRY demonstrates how the arts are both an expression of their contemporary era and how they help "push" cultural change. An outstanding example of the value of arts-centered learning, JAZZISTRY is a powerful thematic approach that crosses the curriculum with links to language arts, math, science, and other content areas ...making them all swing together!! This special JAZZISTRY performance will incorporate some of the uniquely talented members of NAME into the show!! Meet us at the Historic Gem Theater on 18th & Vine for a memorable show in support of NAME projects! Tickets: $25 in advance, $30 at the door. Tax deductible.
